CBD can be helpful for seizures and epileptic fits

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases in dogs. Around 5% of all dogs are affected, which presents a major challenge for both the animals and their owners. New research suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) could be a promising complementary therapy option.

What is epilepsy in dogs?

Epilepsy is often referred to as "falling sickness" or "seizures". It is caused by a malfunction of the brain in which overexcited nerve cells discharge simultaneously. This leads to uncontrolled twitching, muscle spasms and, in many cases, loss of consciousness.

Seizures can vary in intensity. While some dogs experience severe seizures that last several minutes, others only experience brief pauses in consciousness with mild muscle twitches.

Forms and Causes of Epilepsy in Dogs

Primary (idiopathic) epilepsy

This form is genetic and occurs more frequently in certain breeds, including:

  • Golden Retriever

  •

  • Collie breeds

  •

  • Labradors

  •

  • poodle

  •

  • German Shepherds

  •

  • Cocker Spaniel

  •

  • beagle

  •

  • Vizsla

Secondary epilepsy

This is an acquired form caused by various underlying diseases or injuries, including:

  • brain injuries caused by accidents

  •

  • poisoning

  •

  • infections or inflammations of the brain

  •

  • liver or kidney disease

  •

  • tumor diseases in the brain

If epilepsy only occurs after the age of 4 or 5, a targeted search for an underlying cause should be carried out.

CBD as a potential therapy against epileptic seizures

The United States is a pioneer in research into CBD in animals. There are particularly promising studies in the area of epilepsy.

Study situation on CBD in epilepsy

A high-profile study from Colorado State University led by Dr. Stephanie McGrath examined the effects of CBD oil on dogs with epilepsy. In this pilot study, nine dogs received CBD oil, while seven dogs received a placebo.

Results:

89% of dogs that received CBD showed a reduction in their seizures.

Dogs given placebo had no significant improvements.

The study suggests that CBD may have positive effects in the treatment of epileptic seizures.

Dr. McGrath said: "This pilot study is important and it appears that CBD has positive effects on dogs with epilepsy." A larger follow-up study with 60 dogs is already in preparation.

Benefits of CBD for Epilepsy

  • CBD interacts with the dog's endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating neurological functions. Potential benefits include:

  • Reduction in seizure frequency: Initial studies show a significant reduction in epileptic seizures.

  • Anti-inflammatory effects: CBD can reduce inflammation in the brain that promotes seizures.

  • Anxiety-relieving effects: Many dogs with epilepsy suffer from anxiety, which can be reduced by CBD.

  • Fewer side effects than conventional medications: Conventional antiepileptic drugs can cause severe side effects such as lethargy and liver damage.

CBD seems to be well tolerated.

Conclusion

Epilepsy is a stressful condition for dogs and their owners. While conventional medication is often necessary, new studies show that CBD can be a promising, natural support. The results so far suggest that CBD can reduce the frequency of seizures and improve the quality of life of affected dogs.

Anyone considering CBD for their dog should consult a veterinarian beforehand to ensure optimal dosage and application.
