Turmeric and its medicinal uses were already known 6000 years ago. It has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine. In India, turmeric is one of the most widely used spices, as it is believed to have a stomach-strengthening effect. Today we know that the ingredients (curcuminoids) of Curcuma longa have many beneficial properties. Studies with curcumin extracts show that, through an interaction in arachidonic acid metabolism and via inhibitory effects on the transcription factor NF-κB, the formation of pro-inflammatory tissue hormones (e.g., cytokines, prostaglandins) can be reduced.
